Parameters night photography, part 1
Selecting ISO, extracts, Aperture, white balance, and the focal length when photographing at night.
So, you are in a beautiful city, have enough time to 5 evening and night, armed with a convenient and easy tripod (the choice of a tripod npisano articles “Notes on night photography. Tripod, part 1.” and “Notes on night photography. Tripod, part 2.“) and ready to shoot magical nocturnal species, which certainly is not in the photo albums of your friends.
What camera settings and programs to use, how to put ISO, shutter speed and aperture? My answer to these questions are examples of the photos and you will immediately see the effects,
most importantly: Night is the realm of manual control camera, but this should not be afraid, all simply.
1. It is necessary to manually display ISO value.
In automatic mode cameras can raise the ISO value to an unacceptable level, and if you do not have the specific artistic ideas, ISO then be placed on a minimum value – from different cameras is 50/60/100 units. Large values of ISO at night photography can produce unwanted noise, and this will not “noble” film noise, not very beautiful color digital noise, which will then have to fight in the processing of photographs.
Moscow, Manege Square
Exposuretime – 1/30 seconds
Fnumber – 2.40
ISOSpeedRatings – 800
Focallength – 32.30 mm
Rather, lowering the ISO to the minimum values, you can get sharp clear images:
ISOSpeedRatings – 100
ShutterSpeedValue – 1/3 seconds
ApertureValue – f 10.95
Focallength – 24 mm
Fairness it should be noted, that expensive professional SLR cameras are so advanced, that the IDF 1200 may not have the noise.
2. Experiment with exposure
In low light conditions the shutter speed becomes very long – to tens of minutes, In the town of exposure can range from 1/10 to 15 s. In any case, when such exposure all moving objects and people are becoming blurred and may even disappear from the frame when taking pictures at night.
Here's an example of long exposure, where light is, both day and cars are disappearing from the frame, leaving traces of the lamps and lanterns. People turn into ghosts, that inhabit the city:
Barcelona, musical fountain.
ISOSpeedRatings – 100
ShutterSpeedValue – 15 seconds
ApertureValue – f 13.02
Focallength – 17 mm
Attention turns, both had to squeeze the diaphragm, Still, in the city night light enough. There is another option – use a neutral gray filter, which reduces the flux, but does not change color.
The second picture shows, how to use a long exposure to, to denote the object, not make it to the main frame:
Landing in Hong Kong from retreating ferri:
ISOSpeedRatings – 200
ShutterSpeedValue – 1 second
ApertureValue – f 4.51
Focallength – 11 mm
Smearing of moving objects clearly shows nightly bustle, especially in urban,
ISOSpeedRatings – 100
ShutterSpeedValue – 2 seconds
ApertureValue – f 21.90
Focallength – 35 mm
ISOSpeedRatings – 400
ShutterSpeedValue – 1/20 seconds
ApertureValue – f 4.51
Focallength – 11 mm
